Opinion & Analysis - Letters
LETTER: Mastering the skill of crying fowl
If you propagate an untruth long enough, people eventually start to see it as the truth. South African poultry producers have almost mastered this art.
LETTER: Vice wide of the mark
Had Telford Vice’s most recent article (Try telling Ntini, Ngam blacks do not play cricket, May 15) come before me in the days when I was still editing a publication, I would have red-pencilled the whole thing and written in the margin "Address the argument".
LETTER: Hype where there isn’t
While criticism from the usual quarters against anything the Democratic Alliance does is to be expected, it was somewhat surprising to see Business Day criticising the DA’s support for job creation
LETTER: Local cannot compete
I see dinosaurs are alive and well and living in Kenilworth.
LETTER: A prayer to the gods
To gods of football, have mercy on my tortured soul.
EDITORIAL: Let’s not make excuses
On Sunday morning I came back to SA to OR Tambo from a trip to Australia and China.
LETTER: Anything but AB
The exciting, new "AB" campaign? (Thick end of the wedge, May 14).
LETTER: Escapism at its best
Politics and economics are weak talking points around the world, subjects to be avoided at all costs if a deep gloom is not to settle on any social occasion. Fortunately, the opium for the modern masses is at hand.
LETTER: Stump up to save SA
Can we take it that the greater Johannesburg region is the economic heart of SA?
LETTER: Ventriloquist Gleason
David Gleason may torque, but in "SA must get out of textiles trap" (May 11) he is not much more than a ventriloquist’s doll, sitting on the lap of clothing employers, mimicking their sentiments.
LETTER: Citizens must exercise power wisely
I should admit that as a citizen who yearns for accountability of our leadership, a vibrant democracy and, for that matter, a sense of excitement about the future, I am disillusioned about the quality of the discussion leading up to the African National Congress’s (ANC’s) Mangaung conference.
LETTER: Ramaphosa failed SA
I agree with Peter Bruce that Cyril Ramaphosa will make a wonderful leader for our country (Thick End of the Wedge, May 14).
LETTER: Off-colour argument
RW Johnson is being disingenuous by claiming that white English-speaking South Africans are becoming a rarity in South African cricket (Ignore foolish demand for demographic representivity in cricket, May 10)
LETTER: SA able to lead AU
I question Business Day’s stance on portraying SA as being unable to lead the African Union (AU) into a better future — and quoting a dubious KPMG report about SA not being the gateway to Africa, and taking a derogatory stance against Jacob Zuma’s attempts at getting the AU presidency.
LETTER: Majola acting the fool
You’d think by now Gerald Majola would just man up and hand back his ill-gotten gains (Majola to get details of Cricket SA charges soon, May 16).
LETTER: SA needs Ramaphosa
I refer to the editor’s column (Thick E nd of the Wedge, May 14) and the letter from Lethola Mokakala (Ramaphosa failed SA, May 15).
EDITORIAL: Press can’t resolve issues it raises
To be an editor or any person in charge of a newspaper in SA is probably more difficult than elsewhere.
LETTER: Citizenry has duty too
The problem with Mzukisi Qobo’s column (ANC must rid itself of last vestiges of Mbeki era, May 11) is that it is manipulative — and its suggestion that President Jacob Zuma must be replaced is utterly simplistic.
LETTER: Getting the ball rolling
Phillimon Mnisi’s letter (Reconciliation remains a mirage, Letters, May 14) refers.
LETTER: More of Made in SA
Dominik Heil praises Woolworths for recognising its responsibility to wider society (and not only to shareholders) by protecting the environment and uplifting communities (Business must recognise its responsibility to wider society, May 10).
LETTER: Deliberate puppetry
I refer to David Gleason’s article (SA must just get out of textiles trap, May 11).
LETTER: Ask the right questions
A dramatic headline in a Sunday paper — "Tokyo takes on Zuma" — prompted the usual questions. Never mind that it was not exactly new news — what does it have to do with us now that it did not before?
LETTER: The worst still to come
Will the worst fear of the authors of apartheid still be realised, the fear of "national suicide on the part of whites"?
LETTER: Hunger fans flames
The global recession is changing the face of global politics. In the past we talked of AD and BC periods. Now it is the post-recession era.
